SJEC Celebrated 50 Years
The San Joaquin Engineers Council marked its 50th anniversary with a grand celebration at its annual banquet in February 2017. The event was a fitting tribute to the Council's rich history, with the highlight being the presentation of the 50th Engineer of the Year and the Distinguished Service Award recipient.
All living past recipients of the Engineer of the Year and Distinguished Service Award were cordially invited to join in the festivities, which saw a turnout of 165 guests, including engineers, educators, and allied professionals. Seven high school seniors, who were receiving scholarships, and their parents were also in attendance.
The Council was established in 1966 by a group of engineers from various disciplines with the aim of forming a social group, supporting students who wanted to become engineers, and recognizing engineers who made substantial contributions to the engineering community. The group initially called themselves the San Joaquin Council of Engineers, but later changed their name to San Joaquin Engineers Council when they incorporated as a non-profit corporation. Today, SJEC and its member organizations represent over 1,000 engineers, design firms, and allied professionals.
SJEC's Scholarship Award Program is a unique initiative that sets it apart from other organizations. It is the only program of its kind where engineers and allied professionals come together to support students pursuing an engineering education. Since 1979, SJEC has awarded over $300,000 in scholarships to 258 deserving students. In 2019, the Council awarded nine scholarships totaling $18,000.
